Formed in Athens in 1987, Rotting Christ have never been a band content to stand still. By the time they entered Woodhouse Studios with Samael's Xy at the production helm, brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis had already begun their slow, deliberate shift away from raw black metal toward something far more atmospheric and melancholic. Sleep Of The Angels is the culmination of that evolution — a record drenched in gloomy romanticism, where Sakis's heavily chorded guitar work intertwines with swirling keyboards to create an almost ecclesiastical atmosphere. The vocals shift between his signature snarl and a haunting, whispered clean register that adds an intimate, unsettling tension throughout.
From the martial grandeur of opener Cold Colours and the seductive menace of After Dark I Feel, through the gothic sweep of Victoriatus to the closing epic Thine Is the Kingdom, this album moves as one unified, brooding entity. It's Rotting Christ's most gothic-focused statement, a late-'90s dark metal cornerstone that keeps pulling you back in.
