Background information about 'Sleep Of The Angels'
There are albums that define a moment, and then there are albums that define a band's entire trajectory. Rotting Christ's "Sleep Of The Angels" (1999) is the latter — the moment the Greek titans fully shed their black metal skin and emerged as something darker, grander, and utterly mesmerising.
By the time brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis walked into Woodhouse Studios with Samael's Xy at the production helm, they had something to prove. And boy, did they deliver. "Sleep Of The Angels" is a masterclass in brooding atmosphere — a record that drapes itself in melancholic melodies, crushing guitar chords, and a haunting keyboard presence that feels almost liturgical. Sakis's vocals glide between that signature venomous rasp and a whispered clean register that adds an unsettling intimacy. From the martial stomp of "Cold Colours" to the seductive darkness of "After Dark I Feel", from the gothic grandeur of "Victoriatus" to the epic closer "Thine Is the Kingdom" — this album doesn't just play, it envelops you. It's the band's most gothic statement, a late-90s dark metal jewel that pulls you back before you even realise you've been gone.
