Background information about '20/20'

Twenty albums in, and Saga still sound like a band that genuinely enjoys being in the same room together. "20/20" is a lean, ten-song statement from the Canadian prog institution, and it wastes absolutely no time getting to the point. Opener "Six Feet Under" sets the tone with a chugging riff and a chorus that lodges itself in your skull on first listen, while "Anywhere You Wanna Go" rides a bright, radio-friendly groove that reminds you these guys always knew how to write a hook without sacrificing a shred of musicianship. Michael Sadler's voice remains the band's secret weapon — that unmistakable, slightly nasal tenor that has carried them through four decades of shifting trends and still sounds completely at home here.

What makes "20/20" such a pleasure is its balance. The band lets the keyboards breathe on "Ellery", gives "Spin It Again" a restless, almost new-wave pulse, and then stretches out properly on the closer "Till The Well Runs Dry", a six-minute slow burn that builds with patience and pays off handsomely. Elsewhere, "One Of These Days" and "Ball And Chain" deliver the kind of taut, melodic rock that Saga have been perfecting since the early eighties — no filler, no self-indulgence, just sharp arrangements and choruses that arrive exactly when you want them to. It is the sound of veterans who know precisely what they are doing, and who still get a kick out of doing it.
