Background information about 'Eternal'

When Samael dropped Eternal in 1999, it wasn't just an album — it was a full-blown metamorphosis. The Swiss pioneers who had spent the better part of the '90s carving their name into black metal's frozen bedrock decided to plug into something entirely different: industrial machinery, synth-driven atmospherics, and a rhythmic pulse that owed as much to the dancefloor as it did to the crypt. And somehow, against all odds, they made it work brilliantly.

This is the sound of a band shedding its skin. Vorph's unmistakable rasp still commands the foreground, but now it glides over programmed beats, swirling keyboards, and riffs that feel more mechanical than mystical. "Year Zero" kicks things off with an almost hypnotic stomp, setting the tone for an album that refuses to sit still. Tracks like "Together" and "Ways" balance cold industrial precision with genuine melodic warmth, while "The Cross" builds into something that can only be described as trance-metal — a term that shouldn't exist but absolutely applies here. The second half of the record deepens the cosmic journey: "Nautilus & Zeppelin" drifts into near-ambient territory before "Infra Galaxia" pulls you back into the void with punishing weight. "Radiant Star" closes things out on a note that feels less like an ending and more like a transmission from somewhere beyond.

What makes Eternal so enduring is its fearlessness. This wasn't a band chasing trends — Samael were building their own strange, singular universe. The marriage of extreme metal attitude with electronic textures predated much of what would follow in the industrial black metal sphere, and even decades later, the album sounds like the future.
