There is something wonderfully stubborn about a band that decides Edgar Allan Poe deserves the full death metal treatment, and Shadowthrone go all in on "Quoth the Raven Nevermore". Nine tracks, nine poems and stories dragged out of the 19th century and pushed through walls of downtuned riffing, and the whole thing has the feverish energy of a debut that nobody asked permission for. You can hear the band relishing the material — the gloom of "The City in the Sea," the slow-burning dread of "Lenore," the restless gallop of "Annabel Lee." It is theatrical without ever tipping into parody, and that balance is much harder to pull off than it sounds.
What keeps this record gripping is the sheer commitment. The guitars stay thick and mournful, the drums push everything forward, and the vocals carry that rasped, storytelling quality that makes you lean in rather than flinch away. It is a self-released effort, which means no committee sanded off the rough edges — and honestly, those rough edges are the charm. The band treats Poe not as a gimmick but as a mood board for something genuinely heavy and genuinely heartfelt.
