Background information about 'Savages (10th Anniversary Edition)'
Ten years on, "Savages" still hits like a wall of amplifiers falling on your head, and this anniversary pressing makes it hurt so good. Soulfly were never a nostalgia act, and this record proves it: Max Cavalera sounds like a man half his age, spitting bile and brotherhood over riffs that swing between tribal percussion and straight-up thrash carnage. The production is thick and sweaty, all low-end rumble and razor-wire guitars, the kind of mix that makes a living room feel like a basement club at 2 a.m.
What makes "Savages" such a joy is how restless it is. One minute you get the stomping, chant-along fury of the title era, the next a groove that could fill a stadium, then a curveball that reminds you these guys grew up on Sepultura's most adventurous years and never lost that hunger for the unexpected. The guest spots add spice without ever stealing the show, and the rhythm section locks in so tight you can practically feel the floorboards move. It is heavy, it is proud, it is unapologetically Brazilian in its rhythmic DNA, and it never once sounds like a band going through the motions.
