Background information about 'Sub Rosa In Æternum'

There is a moment about forty seconds into "The Unrelenting Choir" where Tribulation stop being a band you admire and become a band you fear a little. The Swedish four-piece have spent the better part of two decades sharpening their blade somewhere between gothic rock, death metal and something that smells faintly of candle wax and old cathedrals, and "Sub Rosa In Æternum" is the record where all of those obsessions finally lock into place. It is theatrical without ever being silly, heavy without ever leaning on brute force, and melodic in a way that gets under your skin rather than into your ears.

What strikes hardest is the restraint. Where lesser bands would pile on the choirs and the organ swells, Tribulation let a riff breathe, let a bassline crawl, let a chorus arrive like a door opening in a dark hallway. "Saturn Coming Down" and "Hungry Waters" are the kind of songs that sound like they were written at three in the morning by people who had seen something they should not have seen, all shimmering twin guitars and a rhythm section that moves like smoke. "Poison Pages" closes things out with nearly six minutes of slow-burning menace, and by the time it fades you will want to start the whole ritual over again.
