More about the book 'Trolsk Sortmetall 1993–1997'
There are bands that grow, and then there is Ulver, who simply dissolved and reassembled themselves as something else entirely. "Trolsk Sortmetall 1993–1997" is the document of that first, feral incarnation — the Norwegian trio's transformation from teenage black metal firebrands into the strange, folk-tinged wanderers of "Kveldssanger" and the electronic pioneers of "Nattens Madrigal". Compiled as a companion to the DSR tape box of the same name, this hardcover book gathers that arc in printed form, and for anyone who has followed this band down every crooked path, it is a genuinely thrilling object to hold.
What makes it work is the sense of a band refusing to stand still. You can almost feel the restless energy of the early nineties in these pages — the rehearsal-room cold, the tape trading, the stubborn will to make something that sounded like nobody else. Ulver were never comfortable with the rules of the scene they came from, and this book traces that discomfort with real affection for the era. It is not a glossy victory lap; it is a scrapbook of a band figuring itself out in public, and that honesty is exactly what makes it compelling.
Fans of the Norwegian underground will find plenty to pore over here, and the presentation suits the material: stark, serious, and built to be revisited. A fine addition to any shelf that already holds the records.
