Thirty years on, "Into Cold Darkness" still lands like a slab of granite dropped from a great height. Vital Remains were never the band to ease you in gently, and this, their second full-length, is the sound of a Rhode Island crew deciding that subtlety was for other people. The riffs are enormous, the tempos shift from a doomed crawl to a full-on blizzard without warning, and the whole thing reeks of candle smoke, old crypts and stubborn, unpolished conviction. It is death metal built for people who like their music to feel like a physical force.
What makes this record endure is the atmosphere. There is a genuinely eerie, ritualistic quality running underneath the brutality, a sense of dread that most bands of the era could only gesture at. The guitar work is relentless but never mindless, and the production keeps just enough grit to remind you this was forged in a small room with big ideas. Three decades later it still sounds vital, still sounds dangerous, and still refuses to apologise for any of it.
