Sweden's Watcher have been on a mission since day one, and with their second full-length, Mistress of Our Time, they've absolutely nailed it. Formed in 2023, these devoted disciples of the first wave of Swedish heavy metal have been sharpening their blades ever since, and the addition of guitarist Max Warnby and drummer Jakob Nilsson Gustafsson in late 2024 has unleashed something truly special. If their spring 2025 EP Chains of Crystal hinted at the fantasy-drenched adrenaline rushing through this band's veins, then Mistress of Our Time brings that vision to a glorious, velvet-lined boiling point.

The ingredients are familiar to anyone who worships at the altar of early Swedish steel — think Heavy Load, Gotham City, Axewitch, Torch, even the Hot Records-era Europe — alongside equally cultish names like Ostrogoth, Grim Reaper, and Sortilège. But where earlier Watcher recordings aimed to transport you back to 1984, this album actually time-travels there with a unique, mystical magic. Energy, catchy hooks, and atmosphere march here in harmonious lockstep, with ENERGY leading the charge. The quartet gallops into battle with triumphant poise and plenty of power. Wisely, Watcher aren't trying to win any speed race against the coming thrash era — their sword-and-sorcery anthems simply don't need to. Authenticity is the riddle of steel they've mastered, by Crom. If Watcher's goal has always been to keep the old heavy metal spirit alive, Mistress of Our Time captures it with pinpoint intensity.
