Background information about 'Against The Seasons...'

"Against the Seasons..." is the debut release from Woods of Ypres, the Canadian one-man project turned full band that would go on to carve out a singular place in the darker corners of metal. This is raw, atmospheric black metal with a distinctly melancholic undercurrent - the kind of music that feels like watching winter settle over an empty northern landscape. David Gold's vision was already remarkably clear here, blending frostbitten tremolo picking with mournful, almost gothic melodies that set the band apart from the pack from day one.

The album opens with "Intro: The Shams of Optimism," a brooding piece that sets the tone for what follows - five tracks of bleak, contemplative metal that never resort to cheap theatrics. "Crossing the 45th Parallel" and "The Sea of Immeasurable Loss" showcase the band's ability to build atmosphere through repetition and subtle shifts rather than brute force. The production is appropriately raw but never muddy, letting the cold melodies breathe through the mix. This is essential listening for anyone who appreciates black metal with genuine emotional weight and artistic ambition rather than mere extremity for its own sake.

For fans of: Agalloch, Primordial, Katatonia, Opeth
