Background information about 'Open to Misinterpretation'
Scott Conner, the man behind Xasthur, has never been one to play by the rules. With "Open to Misinterpretation", he fully embraces that reality — the title itself a wry nod to the fact that his music has always been a Rorschach test for listeners. And honestly? That's exactly how he wants it.
This isn't a record that panders or tries to fit into neat genre boxes. Instead, Conner digs deeper into his own twisted vision, refining his signature blend of atmospheric black metal, depressive soundscapes, and raw, hypnotic darkness. The songwriting here feels both more detailed and more unpredictable — you never quite know where a track is heading, but the journey is utterly gripping. The production has cleared up noticeably, yet there's still that live, organic, raw energy running through every riff and scream. Having taken Xasthur on tour across the Atlantic, these songs have been forged in the fire of live performance, and it shows. "Open to Misinterpretation" is focused, confident, and unapologetically itself — a statement from an artist who has stopped caring about being misunderstood and started caring only about the music. And if you still don't get it? Well, that's part of the point.
