Background information about 'Deprived of Afterlife'

Long before Abramelin carved their name into the Australian extreme metal canon, there was Acheron — a Melbourne outfit that burned bright and brief, yet left behind recordings that still smell of sweat, tape hiss and cheap rehearsal-room beer. "Deprived of Afterlife" gathers every studio trace this short-lived beast left behind: the 1992 promo tape, the "Deprived of Afterlife" EP that French label Corpsegrinder Records put out in 1991, and the "Eternal Suffering" demo. It is raw, ugly and absolutely glorious.

What hits first is the atmosphere — that murky, cavernous darkness that only early 90s death metal seems able to conjure. The riffs lurch and twist with a loose, almost reckless technicality, the kind that comes from a band still figuring out exactly how far they can push themselves. You can hear the overseas wave bleeding through the speakers — the European school's gloom, the American school's brute force — yet Acheron never sound like a copy. They sound like four guys from Melbourne who meant every note. That they shared stages with Carcass, Morbid Angel and Pungent Stench says plenty about where they stood.

For anyone who digs through the dusty corners of the underground, this is a small treasure chest: a snapshot of a band on the verge of becoming something else entirely. Essential for devotees of the era, and a fine reminder that some of the best death metal was never meant to be polished.
