Background information about 'Écailles De Lune'

There is a moment on "Écailles de Lune" where everything simply dissolves — the guitars stop raging, the shrieks fade, and what is left is a shimmering, weightless calm that feels like standing barefoot in the surf at midnight. Alcest built that moment out of pure instinct back in 2010, and it still hits like a wave breaking over you. This is the record where Neige and company stepped back toward their black metal roots without surrendering a single ounce of the dreamlike glow that made their debut so bewitching. The result is a strange, gorgeous hybrid: tremolo-picked storms colliding with semi-acoustic passages, hypnotic repeating figures, and melodies that refuse to leave your skull for days.

What makes it work is the voice. Neige slides between a warm, dark croon and a fragile higher register, then lets despairing shrieks tear through the texture — and somehow it all flows back together like an unstoppable tide. The album's concept, a tale of a man who literally leaves one world for another, gives the whole thing a restless, searching energy. Neige has said the sea was his muse here, that feeling of sitting in front of the ocean at night, fascinated and frightened in equal measure. You can hear it in every swell and retreat. Call it post-black metal, blackgaze, shoegaze, whatever — labels never quite stick to Alcest, and that is exactly the point. Close your eyes, let it pull you under, and remember that even otherworldly roses have thorns.
