Some records don't just get reissued, they crawl back out of the crypt, and Ancient's 1997 cult favourite "Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends" is exactly that kind of resurrection. Originally issued through Metal Blade, this is the Norwegian outfit at their most theatrical and gloriously unhinged, a record that treats black metal as a stage rather than a rulebook. Aphazel steers the whole spectacle, with Lord Kaiaphas handling vocals and drums while Erichte adds a second voice, and the result sits somewhere between a cathedral organ recital and a midnight stakeout.

What makes it so compelling is how shamelessly it mixes worlds. Ferocious tremolo riffing and blastbeat fury collide with sweeping keyboards, gothic piano lines and a cinematic, almost operatic sense of dread. "Malkavian Twilight" opens with a slow, suffocating grandeur, while "Vampirize Natasha" marches forward like a procession that knows exactly where it's going and refuses to hurry. Elsewhere the band lets loose with a strange, dreamlike weirdness that no other 90s extreme metal act quite dared to attempt. It's symphonic, it's over the top, and it's completely sincere, which is precisely why collectors have been chasing it for decades.
