Background information about 'Likferd'
'Likferd,' the fourth and final full-length album by Windir, embodies a profound shift in the band's musical journey. Released in 2003, it sees the band pushing their defining folk elements to the background, allowing a more dominant black metal influence to take the forefront. The album is a dark and brooding masterpiece that exudes an ominous atmosphere—one that eerily foreshadows its title, translating to 'funeral.' This project was Valfar's last creation before his untimely passing, adding an extra layer of poignancy to its narrative. While 'Likferd' may have lived in the shadows of its predecessors 'Arntor' and '1184,' it reveals a matured sound that signifies an important chapter in Windir's legacy.
The album draws listeners into a somber world where complex melodies intertwine with intense black metal riffs, creating an immersive auditory experience. Tracks like "Resurrection Of The Wild" and "Martyrium" stand out for their intricate guitar work and atmospheric depth. With each song, Windir crafts a narrative steeped in Norse mythology and personal introspection. For fans of Vreid, Mistur, Falkenbach, and Cor Scorpii, 'Likferd' serves as both a tribute to Valfar's visionary artistry and a crucial piece of the rich tapestry that is Windir's musical history.
