Armory have been tearing through the cosmos since 2012, and with their fourth full-length, "Echoes of the Astrolith", the Gothenburg crew hit warp speed and never look back. The guiding lights of Judas Priest, Agent Steel and Slayer still burn bright in their DNA, but somewhere across three albums and last year's "Black Star" EP, Armory built a sprawling universe that is unmistakably their own.

And now they've gone and shifted into an even higher gear. The first thing you'll clock is new vocalist C. Rostoff, and the man wastes zero time making himself felt. His dynamic, fearless voice rockets across the void, spinning the eerie tales of the record's nine main tracks ("Omens" is a fittingly titled instrumental). But as impressive as Rostoff's performance is, the real transformation in Armory's cosmic arsenal is a decidedly darker, heavier, and maybe even nastier sound. This is still speed metal, sure, but it's faster, more gripping, and utterly relentless. "Echoes of the Astrolith" races from one end of the starry emptiness to the other with song structures bordering on technical metal and a band locked in with almost insolent precision. Calling this record a speed metal UFO wouldn't be a stretch. Step into Armory's menacing, pitch-black parallel universe — if you dare.
