Ahab

Ahab emerged from Esslingen, Germany in 2004 with an unprecedented vision: transforming literary masterpieces into monumental doom soundscapes. Founded by Daniel Droste (vocals, guitar) and Christian Hector (guitar), the band conceived their approach around Herman Melville's Moby Dick, creating what would become known as "Nautik Doom" - a distinctive fusion of funeral doom metal with maritime atmospherics.
The debut The Call of the Wretched Sea (2006, Napalm Records) immediately established Ahab as an innovative force within extreme doom territories. This 70-minute odyssey through Melville's whale epic combined crushing riffs with atmospheric passages and Droste's characteristic death growls. Cornelius Althammer (bass) and Stephan Adolph (drums) completed the founding lineup that perfectly executed this literary doom vision.
The Divinity of Oceans (2009, Napalm Records) deepened Ahab's conceptual approach with references to Edgar Allan Poe and further maritime literature. The album demonstrated maturation in their compositional abilities - longer, more complex structures and even denser atmospherics. The move to Season of Mist for The Boats of the Glen Carrig (2015) marked a stylistic evolution toward more progressive elements, based on William Hope Hodgson's novel of the same name.
With The Coral Tombs (2023, Napalm Records), Ahab returned to their roots while simultaneously expanding their sonic palette. The album showcases the band at their creative peak - monumental doom passages alternating with introspective, almost post-metal moments. The current lineup featuring Droste, Hector, Althammer, and drummer Cornelius Althammer has created a continuity that cements Ahab's position as pioneers of literary doom metal.
