The Gathering

The Gathering are one of the most remarkable shape-shifters in Dutch music history. Formed in 1989 in Oss by brothers René (guitar) and Hans Rutten (drums) alongside Bart Smits (vocals), the band began as a raw death/doom act in the vein of early Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride. Their debut Always… (1992, Foundation 2000/Funhouse) was a murky, growling affair that nonetheless hinted at the atmospheric depth to come.

The seismic shift arrived with Mandylion (1995, Century Media). The addition of vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen transformed the band entirely. Death metal vocals vanished, replaced by ethereal, layered melodies and a melancholic alternative rock foundation. Mandylion became an instant classic – a record that effectively birthed a new subgenre of atmospheric rock and influenced countless bands. Tracks like "Strange Machines" and "Leaves" remain staples of the band's legacy.

Subsequent releases on Century Media – Nighttime Birds (1997) and the ambitious double album How to Measure a Planet? (1998) – expanded the sonic palette with electronic textures, psychedelia, and progressive song structures. How to Measure a Planet? is widely regarded as their magnum opus, a sprawling journey through space and emotion. The band continued evolving through if then else (2000) and Souvenirs (2003, Psychonaut Records/The End Records), incorporating trip-hop, dream pop, and ambient elements into their increasingly sophisticated sound.

Van Giersbergen's departure in 2007 marked the end of an era. Norwegian vocalist Silje Wergeland (ex-Octavia Sperati) stepped in, bringing a new dimension to the band's sound. The West Pole (2009, Season of Mist) and Disclosure (2012, Psychonaut Records/Season of Mist) saw The Gathering refine a more introspective, organic approach. The EP Afterwords (2013, Psychonaut Records) served as both a farewell to the van Giersbergen era and a bridge to the future.

After a decade-long hiatus, The Gathering returned in 2024 with Beautiful Distortion (Psychonaut Records), an album that encapsulates their signature blend of dreamy melancholy, progressive rock, and cinematic scope. The band remains active, selectively performing at European festivals. Their trajectory from death/doom obscurity to progressive rock institution is one of the most compelling narratives in heavy music – a testament to artistic integrity and fearless reinvention.
