Ulver
Ulver (Norwegian for "wolves") evolved from one of black metal's most distinctive voices into experimental music's most unpredictable collective since their 1993 formation in Oslo. Kristoffer "Garm" Rygg and Carl-Michael "Exhurtum" Eide laid the foundation with the demo Vargnatt (1993), launching a career that systematically demolished genre boundaries.
The seminal trilogy of Bergtatt – Et Eeventyr i 5 Capitler (1995, Head Not Found), Kveldssanger (1995, Head Not Found), and Nattens Madrigal – Aatte Hymne Til Ulven i Manden (1997, Century Black) established Ulver as atmospheric black metal pioneers. Bergtatt merged raw tremolo-picked passages with acoustic interludes and folkloric narratives written in archaic Norwegian. The entirely acoustic Kveldssanger radically departed from black metal conventions, presenting chamber music compositions. Nattens Madrigal deliberately returned to primitive, forest-recorded black metal—a reaction against the scene's emerging commercialization.
Ulver's transformation accelerated with Themes from William Blake's The Marriage of Heaven and Hell (1998, Jester Records), incorporating industrial metal and ambient elements. Blake's complete prophetic poem was interpreted by guest vocalists including Ihsahn, Samoth, and Fenriz. Metamorphosis (1999) and Perdition City (2000) completed the transition to electronic territories—trip-hop, drum'n'bass, and cinematic soundscapes replaced metal structures. The minimalist ambient works Silence Teaches You How to Sing and Silencing the Singing (both 2001) received Spellemannprisen nominations.
The 2000s saw Ulver explore film soundtrack composition (Lyckantropen Themes, Svidd Neger) and the eclectic Blood Inside (2005), fusing post-rock, jazz, and electronics. Following a creative hiatus, Shadows of the Sun (2007) emerged as a dark ambient masterpiece. Daniel O'Sullivan's addition (2009) initiated a prolific live period. Wars of the Roses (2011, Kscope) integrated art rock and gothic elements, while Childhood's End (2012) featured exclusively 1960s cover versions.
Recent works The Assassination of Julius Caesar (2017, House of Mythology) and Flowers of Evil (2020) reveal Ulver as a synthpop entity with song-oriented structures. The orchestral Messe I.X–VI.X (2013) and drone experiments of ATGCLVLSSCAP (2016) demonstrate continued stylistic fluidity. After three decades, Ulver remain an unpredictable collective under Rygg's guidance, equally fascinating metal purists and avant-garde enthusiasts with their refusal to be categorized.
