Background information about 'Cryptic Aura'
Cryptic Aura is the fourth full-length from Philadelphia's Azure Emote, and it arrives like a signal beamed back from somewhere past the edge of the known map. Ten tracks, each one its own little pocket of abstract insanity, yet somehow they lock together into a single, breathing organism. The guitars of Ryan Moll carve restless, angular shapes while Mike Hrubovcak's keyboards smear cold, unsettling atmospheres over everything — and that rhythm section, with Kelly Conlon (yes, the man who played bass on Death's Symbolic) holding down the low end, gives the whole thing a terrifying sense of gravity.
What makes this record so addictive is how stubbornly it refuses to sit still. One moment you're pinned to the wall by ultra-heavy riffing, the next Anna Murphy's unmistakable voice or Pete Johansen's violin pulls you into something almost elegiac, and then it all collapses back into a crushing event horizon of sound. It's death metal, sure, but death metal with the genre walls knocked down and the ceiling torn off. Restless, defiant, genuinely creative — this is the kind of album that rewards you more with every spin, and it never once plays it safe.
