Background information about 'Gods of War'

Twenty minutes. That is all Blasphemy needed to make one of the most violent, most uncompromising statements black metal has ever produced. "Gods of War" is the Canadian trio's second and final studio album, cut at Fiasco Bros. in the fall of 1992 with a bigger budget and a bigger chip on their shoulder after the sour dealings with Wild Rags. What came out of those sessions is pure kinetic hostility: grindcore-short bursts, riffs that feel like blunt force, and a rhythm section that never once asks for permission. Nocturnal Grave Desecrator and Black Winds, Caller of the Storms and 3 Black Hearts of Damnation and Impurity were joined by bassist Ace Gustapo Necrosleezer and Vaginal Commands, freeing Black Winds to deliver his vocals with total, unhinged focus. The result is the heaviest and most aggressive thing the band ever committed to tape.

Four of these tracks are re-recordings from the "Blood Upon the Altar" demo, and hearing them here with fuller production is a revelation — the same savage ideas, now with the weight they always deserved. It is easy to let "Fallen Angel of Doom" hog the spotlight, but "Gods of War" stands shoulder to shoulder with it, a record that refuses to age because it never tried to be fashionable in the first place. This edition is also a milestone: the first time NWN! has released the album since acquiring the rights from Osmose, repackaged with a layout closer to the band's own original vision. For anyone who likes their extreme music lean, mean and utterly merciless, this is essential.
