Background information about 'Live Ritual: Friday the 13th'
There are live albums that document a concert, and then there are live albums that feel like a door being kicked open into another world. "Live Ritual: Friday the 13th" is firmly the second kind. Captured on a borrowed MiniDisc recorder at one of Blasphemy's first shows after years of silence, this is bestial black metal in its rawest, most unhinged form — no polish, no safety net, just a wall of tremolo, blastbeats and throat-shredding invocation that sounds like it was summoned rather than performed. The hiss and the room noise are not flaws; they are the ritual itself.
What makes this release so special is its place in history. This was the very first vinyl LP ever issued by Nuclear War Now! Productions, and the story behind it — a fan's pilgrimage, a lucky recorder, a handshake of approval from the band — reads like a piece of underground folklore. Now remastered by James Plotkin, the recording has been cleaned of its distracting preamble and given a sharper, more punishing edge, while the updated layout adds extensive background and a stack of photos from the night. It is a document of a moment when a legendary band stepped back into the dark and changed a label's fate in the process.
