Background information about 'True North'
When Borknagar unleashed "True North" back in 2019, they delivered what can only be described as a masterclass in progressive black metal evolution. This isn't just another album – it's a sonic compass pointing toward the future of extreme music, where Norwegian black metal tradition meets breathtaking innovation. The return of ICS Vortex to vocal duties marks a triumphant homecoming, his versatile range dancing between thunderous clean vocals and razor-sharp screams that cut through the atmospheric layers like lightning through storm clouds.
The album's crown jewel, "Up North", showcases everything that makes Borknagar legendary – Vortex's commanding presence floating over Lars Nedland's misty keyboards while Øystein Brun's guitar work weaves intricate patterns of beauty and brutality. From the hellish passages of "The Fire That Burns" to the haunting resonance of "Voices", every track demonstrates why Loudwire crowned this one of 2019's finest releases. This is progressive black metal at its absolute peak, where 30 years of musical evolution crystallize into pure sonic gold.
