Background information about 'Universal (Re-Issue 2023)'
The Norwegian progressive black metal masters Borknagar return with this stunning re-issue of their acclaimed album "Universal", showcasing the band's incredible evolution from their black metal roots into something far more expansive and atmospheric. This release captures the essence of what makes Borknagar such a unique force in extreme metal - their ability to weave together brutal black metal foundations with progressive rock sensibilities, folk influences, and cosmic themes that feel both ancient and futuristic. The album demonstrates Øystein G. Brun's masterful songwriting alongside Vintersorg's distinctive vocal approach, creating a sound that's simultaneously harsh and beautiful.
What strikes you immediately about "Universal" is how effortlessly the band balances aggression with melody, creating compositions that feel like sonic journeys through Nordic landscapes and cosmic realms. Tracks like "Havoc" and "The Stir Of Seasons" showcase the band's knack for crafting memorable hooks within complex arrangements, while deeper cuts like "Coalition Of The Elements" reveal layers that unfold with each listen. The production allows every instrument to breathe while maintaining the raw energy that defines great black metal, making this re-issue a perfect entry point for newcomers and a essential addition for longtime fans.
