Cannabis Corpse have long since transcended the "joke band" tag, and Beneath Grow Lights Thou Shalt Rise is the album that cemented their reputation as legitimate riff-slinging maniacs. Originally unleashed in 2011 and now back in print via Season of Mist, this record is a relentless barrage of Floridian-tinged death metal that worships at the altar of Morbid Angel and Deicide while lyrically obsessing over bongs, buds, and the sacred art of getting absolutely obliterated.

The sheer tightness of the musicianship here is almost offensive given the subject matter. Erik Rutan's production at Mana Recording Studios gives the whole thing that warm, organic punch that makes tracks like "Lunatic Of Pot's Creation" and "Dead By Bong" hit like a gravity bong to the skull. Phil "Landphil" Hall's bass work rumbles with an absurd level of groove, while the guitar tandem of Hall and Nick "Nikropolis" Poulos trade pinch harmonics and dive bombs like they're passing a joint. Josh "HallHammer" Hall's drumming is a clinic in controlled chaos, and Andy Horn's vocals — a guttural, barely-decipherable growl — deliver lines about "Chapel Of Bowls" and "Gateways To Inhalation" with such deadpan conviction that you'll find yourself headbanging before you even process the absurdity. The title track closes things out with a swirling vortex of riffs that genuinely stands among the best death metal closers of its era. This re-release isn't just a novelty — it's a reminder that Cannabis Corpse are one of the most underrated death metal bands of the 2010s, and Beneath Grow Lights is their crowning achievement.
