Background information about 'The Obsession'
There is a moment on "The Obsession" where Charlotte Wessels stops being polite about what she wants from a song. The former Delain frontwoman has always had a gift for melody, but here she lets it run wild — synths that shimmer like rain on neon, guitars that bite just hard enough, and a voice that moves from a whisper to a full-throated roar without ever losing its elegance. This is progressive pop-metal with a theatrical streak, and it never once feels like a compromise.
The guest list tells you plenty about the ambition on display. Simone Simons drops by for "Dopamine", trading lines with Wessels like two conspirators sharing a secret, while Alissa White-Gluz brings her unmistakable fire to "Ode To The West Wind" — a pairing that could have gone wrong in a dozen ways and instead lands perfectly. Elsewhere, tracks like "The Exorcism" and "Soulstice" show a songwriter unafraid of a big chorus, and the extended "Breathe" and the reworked "Soft Revolution (2024)" prove she is just as interested in reimagining her own past as she is in chasing the next hook. It is a record that rewards repeat listens, the kind you keep finding new corners in.
