Green Carnation have always been a band apart. Founded in the early '90s by former Emperor bassist Tchort, these Norwegian auteurs have spent decades carving out a sound that refuses to sit still. And now, after years of teasing, they've finally unleashed the first chapter of their magnum opus: "A Dark Poem Part I: The Shores of Melancholia".

This is the album fans have been waiting for. The lead single "In Your Paradise" hits with a crushing weight, all sublime riffs and somber symphonic layers washing over you like a cold tide. But this record is far from one-dimensional. The title track conjures scarlet clouds of war, while Floydian whirlpools of paranoia drag you under before second wave black metal storms the shores. Kjetil Nordhus delivers the performance of his career — his impassioned cleans ringing out like a captain tied to the mast as the ship goes down in flames. "A lesson learned, now bridges burn" — you feel every syllable.

This is progressive metal at its most cinematic, its most emotionally devastating. A dark night of the soul set to music, and absolutely essential listening.
