CHARLOTTE WESSELS · The Obsession | DIGISLEEVE CD

Digisleeve CD.

Background information about 'The Obsession'

Charlotte Wessels has always been the kind of songwriter who lets the strange thoughts in, and on "The Obsession" she builds an entire world out of them. The former Delain frontwoman trades symphonic bombast for something more intimate and more unsettling at once: gothic-tinged art rock with sharp pop instincts, where a hook can arrive like a whispered confession and a synth line can feel like a door creaking open in an empty house. Her voice is the anchor — clear, warm, and capable of turning on a dime from tenderness to something close to menace.

The guest list here is no gimmick. Simone Simons drops by for "Dopamine", and Alissa White-Gluz lends her unmistakable fire to "Ode To The West Wind" — two collaborations that push the record in wildly different directions without ever breaking its spell. Elsewhere, tracks like "The Crying Room" and "Serpentine" show Wessels at her most theatrical, while "Praise" and "All You Are" prove she can write a chorus you will hum for days. It is a record about fixation in all its forms: on people, on art, on the versions of ourselves we cannot let go of.

Produced with a rich, layered sound that rewards headphones, "The Obsession" is the work of an artist fully in command of her own vision. Dark, gorgeous, and endlessly replayable.
