CHURCH OF MISERY · The Second Coming | CD

Jewelcase CD.

Background information about 'The Second Coming'

When The Second Coming first landed, it hit like a wall of fuzz pedals cranked past the point of reason. Church of Misery had already staked out their territory on the debut, but here Tatsu Mikami and company sharpen the whole thing into something genuinely nasty and genuinely catchy at once. The riffs are enormous, the grooves swing with a greasy 70s swagger, and the whole record sounds like it was recorded in a basement that smelled of gasoline and old Sabbath LPs. This is doom metal that actually moves — no endless dirge, just riff after riff landing like a sledgehammer wrapped in velvet.

What makes it stick, though, is the subject matter. Every track is a serial killer portrait, and the band leans into it with a grim, almost comic-book glee. "I, Motherfucker (Ted Bundy)" opens the record with a riff that could level a building, while "Red Ripper Blues (Andrei Chikatilo)" drags you through the mud with a slow, punishing groove. They even break the pattern with a Cactus cover and a May Blitz cover, plus the instrumental "El Topo" — proof that these guys know their 70s hard rock deep cuts better than most crate diggers. The bonus track "For Madmen Only" closes things out with a final dose of molten riffage.

It is ugly, it is loud, and it is absolutely glorious. Church of Misery understood that the best doom is the kind that makes you nod your head while feeling slightly guilty about it.
