Background information about '2003'
Some records creep up on you. "2003" by Switchblade does something far more unsettling — it simply opens the door and lets the room go dark. The Swedish trio built their reputation on a sound that owes as much to drone and sludge as it does to doom, and here they stretch that vocabulary to its breaking point. Six tracks, no filler, no mercy. Guitars move like tectonic plates, riffs unfold at the pace of a slow landslide, and the vocals sit somewhere between a whisper and a threat. It is heavy, but not in the chest-beating way; it is heavy the way a long winter is heavy.
What makes this record stick is the patience. Switchblade never rush a payoff. The shorter pieces set a mood and then refuse to resolve it, while the longer cuts — and yes, there are some genuinely long ones — become full journeys, drifting through feedback, space and sudden, crushing weight. There is a strange beauty buried in all that murk, a sense of melody that only reveals itself after the third or fourth listen. Play it loud on a decent stereo and the low end will rearrange your furniture. Play it on headphones at night and it will rearrange your head.
The pressing itself is a proper object: black vinyl in a thick sleeve, with a free download code tucked inside for the late-night, walk-home listens.
