Background information about 'Never a Prophet in Your Own Land'

Cloven Hoof have never been a band to sit still, and "Never a Prophet in Your Own Land" proves it once again. Ten albums deep, with Lee Payne still holding down the low end since 1979, the British heavy metal institution sounds positively rejuvenated — and a huge part of that spark comes from the man behind the microphone. Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin, the former Jag Panzer shouter who relocated to Greece, has settled in as if he had been born for this gig. Where "Heathen Cross" wrapped itself in a dark, brooding heaviness, this new record breathes differently: it reaches back toward the eclectic, wide-open spirit of "A Sultan's Ransom", only with sharper focus and a band firing on every cylinder.

And what a ride it is. Mid-tempo crushers give way to galloping speed metal, epic arrangements unfold into straight-up fist-raising rockers, and the whole thing hangs together like a setlist built by someone who genuinely loves the genre. Luke Hatton and Chris Coss trade riffs and solos with a chemistry that only a decade of shared stages can produce, while Ash Baker's drumming keeps the whole machine rolling with real authority. Payne himself calls this the most balanced album the band has ever made, and honestly, it is hard to argue. Conklin's voice remains a force of nature — theatrical, powerful, and full of that theatrical menace that made him a legend in the first place.
