Background information about 'Never a Prophet in Your Own Land'

Never a Prophet in Your Own Land arrives as Cloven Hoof's tenth full-length, and it lands like a statement of intent rather than a victory lap. Lee Payne has kept this lineup intact since Heathen Cross, and you can hear the payoff in every seam: Luke Hatton and Chris Coss trading riffs with the ease of players who have shared a stage for over a decade, Ash Baker driving from behind with real weight, and Chris Dando's keyboards adding that unmistakable streak of theatrical menace. But let's be honest — the headline is Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin. The man sounds absolutely monstrous here, still capable of that glass-shattering upper register and the kind of dramatic phrasing that makes a chorus feel like a proclamation.

What makes this record such a joy is how restless it is. Payne himself admits it leans closer to A Sultan's Ransom than to the brooding Heathen Cross, and that eclecticism is the whole point. Mid-tempo crushers give way to galloping speed metal, then to sprawling epic pieces that stretch out and breathe. "Terror from the Skies" opens the gates wide, "Iron Mask" and "Phantom Chaser" bring the classic NWOBHM swagger, and "Seven Sacred Wonders" closes things on a genuinely grand note. Nothing here feels like filler or nostalgia-bait — it's a veteran band writing as if they've got something left to prove, and proving it.
