Background information about 'Abhorrence'

New Jersey's Cognitive have been sharpening their blades in the technical death metal underground for years, but with Abhorrence they've delivered something that feels like a genuine breakthrough. This is the sound of a band operating at peak precision — razor-tight riffing, labyrinthine song structures, and a rhythmic ferocity that never lets up. What sets Abhorrence apart from the crowded tech-death landscape is the band's refusal to sacrifice groove at the altar of complexity. Every track here hits with the visceral impact of a sledgehammer while simultaneously twisting your brain into knots.

The production on this album is absolutely crushing — the guitars have that perfect balance of clarity and filth, allowing every sweep-picked arpeggio and dissonant chord cluster to slice through the mix with surgical intent. The rhythm section deserves special mention: the bass work is surprisingly prominent and inventive, weaving through the chaos with a personality all its own, while the drumming alternates between blast-furnace intensity and oddly infectious, almost jazzy syncopation. Vocalist Shane Jost delivers a masterclass in modern death metal vocal delivery, ranging from guttural lows to piercing highs that cut through the maelstrom like a serrated edge. Tracks like the title cut and the relentlessly pummeling "A Pact Unholy" showcase a band that understands dynamics — knowing exactly when to pull back into eerie, atmospheric territory before the next sonic assault. This is cerebral brutality done right.
