For the Cosmic Cathedral project and their debut album "Deep Water", this is precisely what Neal Morse did, teaming up with Chester Thompson (Genesis), Phil Keaggy, and Byron House. Much of the album emerged from spontaneous jam sessions, with Morse’s longtime audio collaborator Jerry Guidroz piecing together the best moments—most notably in the album’s 38-minute epic, "Deep Water Suite".
Morse explains: “‘Time to Fly’ also came directly from one of the jam sessions, where we took one of Phil’s ideas and all four of us elaborated on it.” The end result? A sound with a stronger groove-oriented feel—what Morse describes as “prog meets yacht rock meets The Beatles”, infused with an undeniable jazz fusion influence. “These guys are real groovers: even if they're playing proggy stuff, it has more of a Steely Dan feel to it. But when Phil and I start singing, it sounds like The Beatles!”
