Four decades after the Cro-Mags dropped "The Age of Quarrel" on an unsuspecting world in 1986, the New York hardcore institution is back to set the record straight — and burn the whole thing down again in the process. Cro-Mags never did anything halfway, and this re-recording of their landmark debut is no exception. Founding bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan steps up to the mic and drags the entire legacy of the band into the present with a ferocity that would flatten most kids half his age.

What makes this more than a nostalgia trip is the company he keeps. Original AOQ guitarist Doug Holland is back in the fold, joined by former Suicidal Tendencies and Cro-Mags axeman Rocky George, plus members of modern-day torchbearers Turnstile and Rise Against. Produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk — the man behind Power Trip and Blood Incantation — "40 Years of Quarrel" doesn't just rehash a classic, it injects it with fresh venom. Tracks like "Hard Times", "World Peace" and "Malfunction" get a crushing new lease on life, while the 1985 demo-era staple "Everybody's Gonna Die" finally gets its proper due. This is crossover thrash at its most primal: groove, fury and street-level grit in equal measure. Whether you were there in '86 or you're just discovering the movement, this record hits like a brick to the chest.
