Four decades after Cro-Mags detonated the New York hardcore scene with a record that basically rewrote the rules, the band returns to the very source of the fire. "The Age of Quarrel" wasn't just an album, it was a collision: metal's heaviness slammed headfirst into punk's velocity, and out of that wreckage came the crossover blueprint that still gets quoted by every metallic hardcore band worth their salt today. Now, under the guidance of founding bassist and vocalist Harley Flanagan, the Cro-Mags revisit that landmark with "40 Years of Quarrel," and the result is anything but a dusty nostalgia trip.

Flanagan has assembled a seriously stacked cast for this reimagining. Original Age of Quarrel guitarist Doug Holland is back in the fold, joined by former Suicidal Tendencies and Cro-Mags axeman Rocky George, plus members of modern torchbearers like Turnstile and Rise Against. Produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk, the man behind Power Trip and Blood Incantation, these reworkings of "Hard Times," "World Peace," "Malfunction," and the 1985 demo-era classic "Everybody's Gonna Die" hit with a clarity and punch that feels both faithful and ferociously alive. This isn't a band coasting on legacy, it's a band pouring new gasoline on an old flame, for the lifers and the newcomers alike.
