Background information about 'Hate Them'
Darkthrone's "Hate Them" stands as a pivotal moment in the Norwegian legends' evolution, marking their transition from the raw primitivism of their early works into a more refined yet equally devastating approach to black metal. Released in 2003, this album showcases Fenriz and Nocturno Culto at their most focused and deliberate, crafting seven tracks of pure malevolent energy that feel both familiar and refreshingly different from their previous offerings. The production here strikes that perfect balance - clear enough to appreciate the intricate riffwork and punishing rhythms, yet retaining that essential grime that makes Darkthrone so authentically menacing.
What makes "Hate Them" particularly compelling is how it demonstrates the duo's ability to inject fresh venom into their established formula without losing their core identity. Tracks like "Rust" and "Fucked Up And Ready To Die" deliver that signature Darkthrone aggression with renewed purpose, while "Det Svartner Nå" showcases their Norwegian heritage through both language and atmosphere. The album feels like a statement of intent - these veterans proving they could still unleash pure hatred while maintaining their underground credibility and artistic integrity.
