There are debut albums, and then there are statements of intent so raw they feel like a door being kicked open into a frozen abyss. Immortal's "Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism" is exactly that, the moment Abbath and Demonaz first dragged Norwegian black metal out of the rehearsal room and into the howling night. Recorded in 1992, this is the sound of a band discovering its own mythology in real time, all tremolo-picked frost and drums that gallop like something ancient clawing up through the permafrost.
What makes this record so endlessly re-listenable is its refusal to be polished into submission. The production is gloriously primitive, the riffs come in waves of razor-sharp ice, and there is this unmistakable sense of grim joy running underneath it all. Tracks like the title piece and the closing hymns feel less like songs and more like incantations, rituals performed in a forest where the moon never quite sets. It is ugly, beautiful, and completely singular, the blueprint for everything the band would refine into legend over the following decade.
