Background information about 'Release From Agony'
If you want to understand where the sheer violence of German thrash metal comes from, you have to go back to 1987 and "Release from Agony". Destruction were already a force of nature on their first two records, but this one is where the band truly found their own voice and started pushing the genre into darker, more technical territory. Schmier's snarling, venomous delivery is absolutely relentless here, while Mike and Harry lay down riff after riff that feel like a freight train tearing through concrete.
What makes "Release from Agony" so special is the songwriting. This is not just speed for the sake of speed. Tracks like "Dissatisfied Existence" and "Sign of Fear" carry an almost progressive edge, with tempo shifts and haunting melodic passages that were way ahead of their time for a thrash band. The production has that raw, claustrophobic late-eighties feel that makes every snare hit and every squealing lead cut straight through you. It is aggressive, yes, but there is a strange kind of beauty in the chaos, a band pushing against their own limits and coming out the other side stronger.
