Background information about 'Blood In Our Wells'

There is a moment about halfway through "Blood In Our Wells" where the guitars stop circling and simply hang in the air, and you realize you are not listening to a record so much as standing in a landscape. Drudkh made this one in 2006, their fourth full-length, and it remains the point where the Ukrainian outfit let folk melody and pagan atmosphere seep right through the black metal framework instead of just decorating it. The title comes from a line by the poet Oleh Olzhych, written in 1935, and that sense of history pressing down on the present runs through every riff.

What makes it so gripping is the architecture. Most of these pieces are built from two or more interlocking movements, so a track will open on a cold tremolo figure, drift into acoustic shimmer, then surge back with a melody you swear you have heard somewhere before. "Furrows of Gods" and "Solitude" are the long-form centerpieces, each running past eight and twelve minutes, and neither one wastes a second. The production keeps the frost on the strings while leaving the low end warm enough to feel human. It is patient music, unhurried, and it rewards the listener who gives it room to breathe.
