There is a particular kind of cold that only German black metal seems able to conjure, and EÏS have bottled it here on "Stillstand und Heimkehr". Two tracks, twenty-one minutes, no filler, no mercy. This is black metal that understands the value of patience: riffs unfurl slowly, guitars ringing out in long arcs before the blastbeats finally crash down like a storm front rolling over a frozen plain. The production is raw but never cheap, letting the melodies breathe in the spaces between the fury. It is the sound of a band who have absorbed the genre's second wave and its more atmospheric descendants, then forged something entirely their own.
What strikes hardest is the sense of motion underneath all that stillness. The title track in particular builds and recedes like a tide, layering tremolo-picked guitars over a rhythm section that refuses to sit still. There is grief in these melodies, and defiance too, and the vocals sit buried just deep enough in the mix to feel like a voice calling out from somewhere far away. It is music that rewards headphones and darkness in equal measure, the kind of release that reveals new details on every pass. For a short-format record, it leaves a mark far bigger than its runtime suggests, and it makes a strong case that EÏS deserve far more attention than they currently get.
