Enslaved have spent over three decades doing something almost no other band in extreme music has managed: constantly moving forward while never losing the thread of who they are. With "Heimdal", the Norwegian veterans deliver yet another chapter in a discography that refuses to repeat itself, and it might just be one of their most adventurous statements to date.

Named after the Norse god who guards the bridge between worlds, "Heimdal" feels like a gateway record in every sense. Opener "Behind The Mirror" wastes no time, surging forward with that unmistakable blend of blackened aggression and prog-soaked atmosphere the band has perfected. "Congelia" and "Kingdom" are pure Enslaved — spiraling riffs, cosmic synths, and Grutle Kjellson's commanding roar trading blows with the cleaner, more melodic passages that have become their trademark. The title track closes the record on a sweeping, almost cinematic note that lingers long after the final chord fades.

What makes this album so thrilling is how effortlessly it balances raw power with genuine beauty. The rhythm section of Arve Isdal and Cato Bekkevold is locked in and relentless, while Ivar Bjørnson's guitar work weaves intricate textures that reward repeat listens. There is a sense of journey here — every track feels like a step deeper into some ancient, mist-shrouded landscape. This is progressive metal at its most vital, played by a band that still sounds hungry after all these years.
