"Hemmed By Light, Shaped By Darkness" is the sound of a band rewriting its own DNA. Italian avant-garde metallers Ephel Duath have never been easy to pin down, but this 2013 album sees them diving headfirst into progressive waters with a renewed sense of purpose. The dual-guitar attack of Davide Tiso and new partner Marco Minnemann's drum work creates a dizzying landscape where jazz-fusion precision collides with crushing heaviness.

The record opens with "Feathers Under My Skin", a track that immediately announces the band's shift toward a more melodic yet no less challenging approach. Tiso's riffing is angular and unpredictable, shifting between clean, almost psychedelic passages and bursts of technical ferocity. "Tracing The Path Of Blood" and "When Mind Escapes Flesh" continue this trajectory, weaving intricate time signatures into songs that somehow remain hook-laden. The closing title track duo, "Hemmed By Light" and "Shaped By Darkness", bookends the album with a delicate instrumental giving way to a final surge of progressive metal mastery.

This is Ephel Duath at their most accessible, yet still far from easy listening. The production is crisp and modern, allowing every instrument to breathe within the complex arrangements. Vocalist Cristian "Criz" Tonelli delivers both aggressive shouts and clean, atmospheric singing, adding another layer of dynamic contrast to an already multifaceted work.
