Background information about 'A Blessing In Disguise'

Let's be real for a moment: Norwegian progressive metal has given us plenty of oddities over the years, but Green Carnation's "A Blessing In Disguise" from 2003 remains one of the most beautifully peculiar records to ever emerge from that scene. This is the album where the band, originally conceived as a doom-death act by founder Tchort (ex-Emperor, Blood Throne), decided to throw the rulebook out the window entirely. What we got instead is a sprawling, emotionally volatile journey that refuses to sit still.

The opening track "Crushed To Dust" hits you with that signature melancholic heaviness, but then "Lullaby In Winter" unfolds like a dream sequence, all clean vocals and atmospheric textures that wouldn't sound out of place on a Katatonia record. The title track "Writings On The Wall" is pure progressive gold, shifting gears from delicate passages to crushing riffs with an effortlessness that few bands can pull off. Kjetil Nordhus's vocal performance is the thread that holds it all together, soaring one moment, intimate the next. There's a theatrical quality running through the entire album, especially in "The Boy In The Attic" and the closing epic "Rain" that just washes over you. This isn't metal for the mosh pit, it's metal for the headphones, late at night, with the lights dimmed.
