HEILUNG · Sagas | BLACK 2LP

Black double vinyl in gatefold sleeve

Background information about 'Sagas'

Heilung have spent a decade stitching the modern world back to its roots, and "Sagas" is where that thread runs straight into a video game — and comes back out carrying something far bigger. Written with Ninja Theory for Hellblade II: Senua's Saga, these eleven pieces find Maria Franz, Kai Uwe Faust and Christopher Juul trading the festival stage for a cinematic, environmental frame. The result is unmistakably theirs: throat singing that rattles the ribcage, frame drums that march like a war band, and melodies that feel older than any of us. The entrancing "Seidh", performed live at The Game Awards, summons the Norse myth that steers Senua across ninth-century Iceland, and it lands like a spell you did not consent to.

What makes "Sagas" more than a soundtrack is what happened after the sessions. Franz, Faust and Juul came home from ten days crossing Iceland so shaken by the raw force of the landscape that they kept writing — past the game, past the brief, into their own mythology. "Slagt" arrives on rumbling drums and fiery chanting, prophesying the end of the world with the unstoppable weight of a volcano, while lead single "Laeknisgaldr" does the opposite: it heals through sheer repetition, like water wearing down stone. That tension between annihilation and repair is the whole record in miniature.
