Germany's HIGH WARDEN emerges from Münster with their debut full-length "Astral Iron", a commanding statement that perfectly encapsulates their self-proclaimed "Morgul Doom Commando" aesthetic. Founded in 2022 by vocalist/guitarist Alastair van Morgue-Gûl and drummer Sadistic Hammer, with Lord Perish completing the lineup on bass, this trio has crafted something truly special - what they accurately describe as "Slow Heavy Metal". The album pounds and pulses with barbaric intensity, deploying crushing riffs that leave wide-open spaces in anticipation of each addictive slash of ancient steel.
Recorded live to capture their raw energy, "Astral Iron" showcases earthen and mossy tones that perfectly match their epic execution. The five primary tracks lumber forward with high adventure aplomb, while "Burgfrieden" serves as a hauntingly serene synth interlude. A. v. Morgue-Gûl's plaintive vocals weave tales based on individual thoughts, packaged as analogies to fantasy works, historical events and legends. The closing epic "We Shall Burn at Foreign Shores (The Choice of Achilles)" demonstrates the blanching power that makes HIGH WARDEN such a formidable force in the doom metal landscape.
