Background information about 'Osculum Obscenum (Reissue 2023)'

If you want to understand where Hypocrisy came from — I mean really came from — you need to go back to 1993 and crank Osculum Obscenum at maximum volume. This isn't the polished, atmospheric death metal the band would later become known for. This is raw, filthy, and utterly unapologetic old-school death metal that hits like a sledgehammer wrapped in barbed wire. Peter Tägtgren hadn't yet fully evolved into the melodic mastermind behind albums like Abducted — here he's still knee-deep in the muck of Florida-inspired brutality, and you can feel every ounce of that youthful fury in these tracks.

The opening salvo of "Pleasure of Molestation" sets the tone immediately: frantic riffing, guttural vocals that sound like they're clawing their way out of a grave, and a rhythm section that just doesn't let up. What makes Osculum Obscenum special, though, is that even in this primordial state, you can hear the seeds of Tägtgren's songwriting genius. Tracks like "Necronomicon" and "Black Metal" — yes, that title is a statement — weave in eerie melodic undercurrents that would later become Hypocrisy's trademark. The production is underground through and through, but that's exactly the point. This is death metal the way it was meant to be heard: dangerous, dirty, and completely unconcerned with mainstream appeal. The reissue on Nuclear Blast gives a new generation the chance to own a piece of Swedish death metal history without hunting down overpriced originals.
