Some bands whisper their way into your skull. Konvent would rather pry it open with a crowbar. On "Call Down The Sun", the Danish four-piece drags doom metal down into a pitch-black cellar and locks the door behind them, letting riffs decay slowly, deliberately, like something rotting in beautiful slow motion. There is no warmth here, no comfort, just the low-end rumble of guitars tuned somewhere south of hope and drums that land like slabs of wet concrete. It is crushing, and it is absolutely mesmerizing.
What makes this record so gripping is its patience. Nothing is rushed, nothing is wasted. The Copenhagen outfit builds walls of sound and then stands back to watch them crumble, letting feedback and silence do as much work as any riff. It is funeral doom with a punk heart, sludge with a sense of drama, and it never once begs for your attention, it simply takes it. Turn the lights off, turn the volume up, and let this one sink in deep. This is heavy music for people who thought they had already heard everything heavy.
