From the deepest Norwegian underground emerges a legend that predates the second wave of black metal – Malfeitor, the obscure entity that would later spawn the legendary Strid and Manes. "The Smell Of Death" represents a crucial piece of Norwegian black metal history, collecting the complete recorded output of this mysterious horde from Askim between 1991 and 1992.
When their compatriots were signing international record deals and gaining worldwide recognition, Malfeitor deliberately remained in the shadows, spreading their darkness through home-dubbed tapes in minuscule quantities. This collection showcases their devotion to stripped-down, minimalist black metal in the vein of early Bathory, Ildjarn, and Darkthrone. The raw, uncompromising sound captures the essence of Norwegian black metal's formative years, featuring both demo recordings and rehearsal material that demonstrates the band's potential for greatness – a potential that was sadly never fully realized due to their brief two-year existence.
